Children’s Defense Fund, Leave No Child Behind

A healthy start is the foundation for sound child development and school achievement.  A child’s right to live, grow and thrive should not depend on the lottery of birth or geography.  We believe it is unjust, morally intolerable and economically costly that nine million children lack health coverage and a baby is born without health insurance every 51 seconds in our rich nation.

We believe we can and must do better in protecting the health and wellbeing of all our children.  We commit to hold our Members of Congress and our President accountable with our voices and votes for enacting urgently needed comprehensive high quality health coverage for all children now!” If you have not, please complete the petitions and send them to the National Headquarters, Attn: Children’s Defense Fund by September 31, 2007.

Harriet Tubman Day

The Month of March commemorates Women’s History Month. The Harriet Tubman Historical Society has selected March 10th as a holiday to recognize the contributions and achievements of all women regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, social or economic status in the spirit of Harriet Tubman.

The proposed holiday is also an opportunity to sponsor legislation to address relevant issues to improve the quality of life for women. Tubman was and is an American Heroine who dedicated her life to bringing freedom, justice and human dignity to enslaved African Americans. If you have not sent in your petitions please do so by September 31, 2007.

Allensworth National Historical Park

Allensworth State Park  is one of the few African American National monuments, it is important that we join collectively to let our elected officials know how vital it is to keep this park part of our history.

Located in the Central San Joaquin Valley, Allensworth is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was one of a handful of towns around the country founded in the early 1900s by blacks who left the oppressive Jim Crow South to start communities based on Booker T. Washington's principles of self-help and self-rule. Its founder, Col. Allen Allensworth, was a former Kentucky slave and a Buffalo Soldier.

These all-black towns remind us of the significant, though often forgotten, accomplishments of African-Americans in the midst of extreme adversity. But now, Allensworth is fighting for its survival. A neighboring property owner wants to build two mega-dairies on its doorstep. The tons of manure and flies would be the kiss of death for the park.

Bill AB576 would protect Allensworth by establishing a much-needed perimeter around the park. The state must act now or a valuable cultural resource will be lost to us forever. Here is how you can help, contact the Governor's office, your State Assembly/Senators/Congresspersons by Fax, telephone, e-mail, and tell them to support AB576.  We wish to let them know how we feel about our rich treasures and culture.
